Tips on the Best Outdoor Fire Pit Purchase

Material:

Steel, stainless steel, cast iron, copper and ‘tile and stone’ are five options. Steel is lightweight but prone to rusting. On the other hand, stainless steel is rust-free and durable. It is expensive. However, it can retain its appeal for years. Cast iron is a popular option. It is heavier than steel though light enough to move around. Cast iron fire pits come in a variety of interesting designs.

Copper is the strongest but costliest. Copper fire pits also last for years. On downside, they develop stains over time. Tile and stone fire pits are very heavy and not an ideal choice if you need frequent transportation for occasional changes in backyard appearance. However, they feature a unique and artistic look.

What is the best material for an outdoor fire pit? Well, each of them has some unique pros and cons. Empower yourself with knowledge and choose what will work best for your purpose.

Size:

Never settle for a small fire pit if you have a large yard. Larger fire pits produce more heat and so are not ideal for small yards. Consider the overall dimension of the fire pit you want to purchase. Medium-sized fire pits are the most popular choice. Some medium-sized models feature stands for easy transportation.

Fuel Type:

Traditional fire pits are wood-burning whereas modern models run on natural or propane gas.

Cut-outs:

Wood-burning fire pits feature cut-outs around the edges. These are usually decorative pieces, mainly adorned with animal or star figures. Decoration makes them more attractive and also improves airflow for flame burning. Some fire pits are also available in plain geometric shapes.

Low Smoke:

Gas fire pits don’t produce smoke. Some wood-burning pits also emit a very low amount of smoke.

Why Should You Need an Outdoor Fire Pit?

The idea of relaxation is not confined to your indoor space only. In fact, you will feel more relaxed with a cup of brewing tea or coffee while talking to your friends or family members in your beautifully decorated yard. But what if it is cold outside and night has enveloped the ambience into the clutch of its pitch darkness? Would you love going outside? ‘NO’.

An outdoor fire pit is a great choice for spring, fall and winter evenings when temperature is low and creates the right ambience for you to enjoy your evening with your relatives and pals. The pit will also add to the aesthetic charm of your outdoor space and make it more beautiful than ever. Just a simple addition can transform your yard into a warm and welcoming escape when mercury dips.

Let us tell you there is no outdoor accessory like a fire pit that spins such a magical charm and make your backyard a wonderful get-together spot to enjoy roasted marshmallows, hot dogs or raise a storm over a mug of beer or whisky.

What Should You Consider to Buy the Perfect Fire Pit for Backyard?

There are so many incredible varieties in fire pit designs and prices to cater to different preferences and pockets that you will easily get spoilt for a choice. Some of the high-end and high-priced fire pits come packed with integrated features that guarantee top-notch function and safety. We have found some great options – both affordable and expensive – to give a shape to your dreamy backyard.

There are many things to consider when buying an outdoor fire pit, from the fuel type, size and placement to cut-out and construction material. In the next segment, we will discuss the most important points to consider when buying a fire pit. We strongly hope that you won’t suffer the broom trait of forgetfulness.

Construction Material for Fire Pits

It is, perhaps, the most important element when deciding on a particular fire pit model. Many outdoor fire pits feature a steel body. Steel is a great choice for fire pits. Steel fire pits are available in a wider range of models in terms of both quality and price. It is possible to mold steel in any desired shape. The big disadvantage is unprotected steel is prone to rusting over time. Therefore, go with a powder-coated option. High-end steel fire pits are usually handcrafted by a skilled artisan and amazingly unique. Even you will find some wonderful styles and sizes in low-priced models.

Stainless Steel fire pits are durable and rust-free models. They retain their great look for years. Many homeowners prefer stainless steel for their industrial look and functionality. However, they are rare due to their high price.

Cast Iron is one of the commonest and most popular options when it comes to construction materials of outdoor fire pits. Cast iron fire pits are heavier than their steel counterparts but lightweight enough for easy shifting if needed. Cast iron is not costly and also not as heavy and strong as wrought iron.

Copper is certainly the best choice for fire pit material. These are not prone to rusting. Most copper-made fire pits develop stains over years. However, they offer durability. On the downside, they are expensive but the extra expenses are worth it in the long run.

Tile and Stone fire pits are either wood-burning or gas-fuelled type. They look very unique and creative. These fire pits are constructed from a strong steel frame, with rocks or bricks and tiles applied to the mesh body through a standard masonry process. These rock fire pits are usually very heavy and so not ideal for frequent shifting.

Size

You should first consider the area of your backyard before deciding on the fire pit size. Make sure to be clear about whether a portable kind or a permanent alternative you prefer most. Fire pits can be large, mid-sized and foldable kind perfect to carry on a camping trip.

Larger fire pits have more heat generation capacity. But what if you don’t have enough space to accommodate a larger, permanent kind in your backyard? A larger variety is also not an ideal choice if you move frequently and want to carry a fire pit for ‘fire, food and fun’ at campsites. Larger models are expensive and become a headache for frequent campers.

Medium-Sized fire pits are the most popular due to their easy maneuverability, convenience and cost advantage. These are usually around 30-inch wide and contain a good amount of wood. Most medium-sized models feature stands that make cleaning a lot easier. They are available in a wider breadth of styles and sizes.

Smaller fire pits are portable and designed to move around easily. If you go out camping often and want to carry a fire pit on your trip, a portable model is the right choice to lay hands on. You will find some smaller fire pits with foldable legs as well as carrying cases, which make it extremely convenient for transportation. Some portable models can be wheeled around for easy transport and ash cleanup.

If you are travelling to festivals, parks, campgrounds or looking for a magical makeover of your backyard, it’s quite challenging to lug around a heavy wooden or metallic fire pit. A nice-looking fire pit could be a great centerpiece at your outdoor living space. Whether you want a decorative model or prefer a fire pit to cook food outdoors, it’s good to go with the portable models as these ensure contained fire and greater safety.

Placement

Placement is an important consideration even before you buy a fire pit. Most fire pits should be placed on a non-combustible surface. Therefore, you should use a heat liner if the model needs to be placed on a flammable surface such as, wooden deck.

Function

You need to assess the purpose of buying a fire pit before choosing a model. Do you want to use it to cook food or share warmth of your outdoor space with your friends or relatives? Some people want to use fire pit as a decorative item to enhance elegance of their outdoor space. Followings are the available options for your consideration:

Grilling: Some fire pits can double as a grille where you can prepare a variety of delicious foods. You can purchase a grate to fit your existing fire pit if it features one.

Tables: Fire pit tables serve multiple purposes. They generate heat to make chilly nights warm and welcoming for you to spend time in your backyard. They also provide a great surface to prepare and place drinks when you are busy enjoying your outdoor space with others. Fire pit tables widely vary from bar or dining table to coffee table in height. The table-like fire pits feature beautiful designs with decorative glass, mosaic tiles, wrought iron and other options. You can easily install it into your outhouse furniture set.

Camping Ring: It is lightweight and safe for backyard campfires. If you plan to purchase a simple fire pit without spending a fortune, a fire ring could be the perfect option for your purpose.

Artistic: Those with an eye for artwork will find this type a great one for their pool or porch area. Artistic fire pits exude artistic elegance and create a statement in your outdoor space.

Cut-outs

Usually, wood-burning fire pits feature cut-outs around their edges. Wood-burning fire pits are often decorated with animal or star figures though plain geometric shapes are also available. Decoration is meant not only to accentuate the appearance but also to promote airflow to keep the flame burning.

Fuel Type

Fuel type is one of the Macro considerations when buying a fire pit. Modern-day fire pits have their flames dancing from a tank of natural or propane gas whereas the traditional types rely on wood burning. Each type has some unique advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it rests with you to choose the right type that will serve your purpose and fit your budget.

If wood is abundant in your garden, choose a wood-burning fire pit. If you prefer a model that needs low maintenance, a gas fire pit will make a good choice.

Low Smoke

Gas fire pits don’t emit smoke. However, some wood burning systems generate very low smoke. It is good if you choose a wood-burning fire pit that does not generate excessive smoke.

How to make an outdoor gas fire pit?

An outdoor fire pit is a great accessory to enjoy your time outside during a chilly cold night. If you are buying a fire pit, it is highly recommended to ask for an expert’s help to install the model. But if you are a DIY enthusiast and want to build up a fire pit on your own, it is time-taking but not impossible to do. Follow the instructions and you are done with building it from the scratch:

  • First decide where you want to build your fire pit and how to supply gas to the spot. If you prefer to go with a natural gas line, get it installed by a certified gas technician before trying your hands on assembling. You should also check city ordinances to make sure that your fire pit is built according to the legal codes.
  • If you want to build your fire pit on the grass, create a 40-inch diameter circle with a chalk and remove all grass, roots and sod from the area. Dig out 2-inch of soil from the area. Level the soil where you want to build your fire pit. Add paver base of 1-2”. Pak the base and use a leveler throughout the work.
  • After you are done with installing the paver base, install the vapor barrier as you are assembling the fire pit on the top of a paver patio or on grass. It will prevent moisture in the ground and protect the gas burner kit. However, vapor barrier is not required if you are installing the fire pit on a concrete slab.
  • Lay the first ring of hardscape in the circle. You can use tumbled radius pavers, retaining wall block or the likes. An interior diameter of 32-37” is highly recommended. Level with a rubber mallet.
  • Lay the next ring of concrete block. Leave enough space for the control panel as well as optional vent block. If you don’t like the vent block, leave enough space between the concrete blocks for proper air flow underneath the fire pit burner. At least, a 10-square inch gap is highly recommended.
  • Once the concrete blocks are perfectly placed and spaced, remove block at a time with extreme care and use concrete adhesive. Put the block back on the ring and let it set with little pressure. Repeat the process until all the blocks are tightly glued in the place.
  • Assemble the burner and place it on top of the concrete block ring. There should be at least 1″ overlap to secure the burner ring.
  • Assemble the third layer of concrete block. Repeat the adhesive application procedure.
  • Add lava rock as long as the burning area is not covered with 2 inches of rock (approximately).
  • Light the fire pit you have built and enjoy a great time around the fire.

It comes with all the bells and whistles that you might have trouble finding in a portable fire pit model. The battery pack on the side drives a four-speed fan that pumps air through 51 jets, helps hasten the burn, controls intensity of flame and reduces smoke.

The battery easily pops off the fire pit, reliving you from the worries of having to carry the entire body inside your house, place it closer to an outlet whenever it needs a recharge. The model features a USB output.

Stay extra careful while using the fan. It continuously produces a high sound, which is a minor nuisance but needs a mention. All the perforations gave us enough concerns that the wind would cause flame to blow out.

We noticed during our testing that the flame continued glowing even on a windy day. The ash drain and inner removable grate ensure quick cleaning after the flames stop burning. It’s the best outdoor pit for its small size and smokeless delivery.

The model allows you to convert the fire pit into a grille and cook delicious, grilled items, without which, the real charm of campfire gets lost significantly.

2. Camp Chef Redwood Portable Propane Fire Pit

Camp Chef Redwood Portable Propane Fire Pit

Gas is the simplest option to use in a fire pit when it comes to grilling. The 55.000 BTU Camp chef redwood portable propane fire pit is the best full-size fire pit to install and fire up.

You don’t have to take the trouble experimenting with getting fire started and tending to it; just hook up the gas tank, open the valve and turn the pit on to get flame glowing brightly.

Trying to light your own fire is full of fun, especially during a campfire but sometimes, you will want heat on demand. It switches from just a fire pit to a cooking medium for preparing mouth-watering dishes within a few seconds.

You need to pay special attention to the placement of propane tank. Never place the tank too close to the flame. The fire pit comes with a long hose and hence, you can always place it at a safe distance for your peace of mind.

Camp Chef comes with a steel support ring to nest the tank in. it helps to hold the tank upright on a slightly wavy surface. Its portability suffers as you need to lug the propane tank around. It’s a clear disadvantage but won’t feel so if you tailgate it for car camping.

The flame continues glowing even when the fire pit is installed on a low setting amid light wind. Low rim and absence of anything to guard the flame cause heat to fickle on gusty nights.

The manufacturer claims that Redwood causes no nuisance by emitting smoke. However, we felt the mild odor of propane whenever the pit was placed downwind.

Spec Sheet:

  • Dimension: 12 x 19 x 21 inches
  • Weight: 33 Pounds
  • 55,000 BTU/hr output

Can I leave my fire pit outside?

‘Yes’ is the one-word answer. Durability of your fire pit depends on both its material and manufacturer. Make sure the structure and burner are made of high-quality material and top-notch technology before leaving it outside overnight. The glowing flame in a fire pit looks controlled and captivating at night. The beauty often leaves you wondering if it can be left burning throughout the night. The idea is excellent but devoid of pragmatism. This is because, you can never predict when the wind will cause even the dying ember to glow with voluptuous and voracious flame to gobble up everything around. Make sure that there is no trace of even feeble fire in the fire pit. Also never make the mistake of being nonchalant or careless while being around the fire. After all, you should always stay extra careful while enjoying the warmth of dancing flames in the fire pit.

Are fire pits bad for environment?

Wood-burning fire pits cause more air pollution than stoves and heaters. They generate an unhealthy amount of smoke into the air. However, fire pits that run on natural or propane gas don’t emit smoke and therefore, are a much environment-friendly option.

Many standard fire pits are too low to integrate propane tanks. However, customized designs with an extra height are also available to contain propane tanks on customers’ demand.

How does the gas line connect?

It always makes sense to hire an expert for the work. However, there is no harm in knowing the process. Followings are the steps to connect the gas line to your fire pit:

Cover the drain
Put wire-mesh squares over the drain at the bottom of your fire pit to prevent clogging in the drain due to debris or grit. Make sure to take extreme care while working with flammable gas or gas lines.

Install the gas burners
Install the log lighters or gas burners at the bottom of the pit. Make sure that the pre-installed gas supply to your fire pit is turned off. Next, take out the caps from the connection. Put the log lighters in place and secure them onto their connections.

Test the flame
Test the flame after you are sure that the log lighters are properly installed in place. Use an extended fireplace lighter, keep the flame in place on the log lighter and turn on the gas.

Turn holes face down
Check and adjust the log lighters to operate the fire pit properly before turning the gas off. Allow the fire pit to cool and turn the log lighters for the holes to face down. Both the air-inlet and gas holes should face downward to ensure even flame dispersion throughout the rocks. This way, they won’t become filled or clogged with rain water.

Can I burn wood in the outdoor fire pits?

No, you should not burn wood in your gas fir pit. Wood-burning fire pits produce too much heat and hence, can damage the pit or even cause an accident. Though the fire pit is designed to hold up to very high heat and temperature, you should avoid burning wood in a gas fire pit.

Is placement of the logs important?

For some pits, log placement in a particular way is important. In such a case, detail about log placement is explicitly described in the product manual. If the manual does not specify any such log placement detailing, you can arrange the logs the way you like.

Does it matter what type of wood I burn in my outdoor fire pit?

If you buy a wood-burning fire pit, we will always recommend burning dry, seasoned hardwood. Dry and properly seasoned hardwood will produce less smoke but burn more completely and hotter. This kind of firewood has a moisture level up to 20 per cent or even less.

How to clean my fire pit?

Before you start cleaning, make sure that ember is not burning even feebly in the fire pit and it is completely cool to touch. Remove the ashes from the pit and dispose them completely. You can use a baking soda or a mild dish-washing detergent to clean the fire pit. Use a nylon scrubbing brush and a citrus-based degreaser to remove the stubborn stains.
